Core Technologies Behind MentisODN
Pre-connectorized Architecture
MentisODN replaces traditional field splicing with factory-terminated optical components and pre-connectorized cable assemblies. Most passive network elements can be installed through simple plug-and-play connections, significantly reducing deployment complexity and dependence on specialized fiber technicians. The decoupled design of optical nodes and cable assemblies also enables parallel construction, helping operators accelerate FTTH rollout and shorten project delivery timelines.

Uneven Optical Splitting Technology
MentisODN adopts an uneven optical splitting architecture to improve network flexibility and resource utilization. By combining uneven and standard splitters within the distribution network, operators can support cascading deployment models while maintaining standard PON split ratios. This approach enables efficient coverage across different subscriber density scenarios while reducing infrastructure requirements and improving network scalability.

Fully Sealed Enclosure Design
Unlike traditional distribution boxes that require repeated opening during installation and maintenance, MentisODN utilizes factory-integrated sealed enclosures with externally accessible connection ports.
The sealed design protects internal optical components from dust, moisture, and environmental exposure while minimizing human intervention. With IP68-rated Sub Boxes and End Boxes, the solution delivers enhanced protection against water ingress, dust contamination, and harsh outdoor conditions. Subscriber activation and service expansion can be completed without opening the enclosure, helping preserve optical performance and improve long-term network reliability.

MentisODN Solution Components

Hub Box
Functions similarly to a traditional ODN optical cross-connect cabinet. A 1:2 even optical splitter can be optionally installed based on the network’s splitting ratio requirements.

Sub Box
Integrates an uneven optical splitter to support both subscriber access and cascading connections. Designed for flexible expansion in pre-connectorized FTTH networks.

End Box
Functions as the terminal distribution node for subscriber connections. An integrated optical splitter provides efficient fiber distribution without further cascading.

Distribution Cable
Provides plug-and-play connectivity between optical cross-connect cabinets and distribution boxes. Factory-terminated connectors simplify installation and reduce deployment time.

Drop Cable
Connects distribution boxes to ONU/ONT devices through pre-terminated cable assemblies. Hardened connectors enable fast installation and reliable subscriber access.

OTDR
Online monitoring unit deployed in equipment rooms. It monitors PON fiber links in real time, locates breakpoints and loss, triggers fault alarms, and supports full lifecycle link management.

ATB
Fiber terminal box, deployed at user side. It splices, stores and splits fiber ends with outdoor protection, connecting to user ONU.

FWDM
WDM module installed in equipment room. It multiplexes/demultiplexes PON and OTDR signals for concurrent transmission over one fiber.
Flexible for Every FTTH Scenario
Low-User-Density Scenarios
For low-user-density scenarios, the networking solution typically adopts a “prefabricated optical cross-connect cabinet (1:2) + N (N ≤ 7) levels of prefabricated cascading boxes (1:5) + prefabricated end box (1:4)” architecture. This solution is suitable for sparsely populated, widely dispersed users such as those in mountain villages.

Medium-User-Density Scenarios
The 8-port prefabricated distribution box is the most typical application in pre-connectorized ODN solutions. The “prefabricated optical cross-connect cabinet (1:2) + N (N ≤ 3) levels of prefabricated cascading boxes (1:9) + prefabricated end box (1:8)” is the most commonly used and widely applicable networking solution, suitable for medium-user-density scenarios such as urban multi-story residential buildings, shopping malls, towns, and villages.

High-User-Density Scenarios
For high-user-density scenarios, the networking solution typically adopts a “prefabricated optical cross-connect cabinet (no splitting) + N (N ≤ 3) levels of prefabricated cascading boxes (1:17) + prefabricated end box (1:16)” architecture. This solution is suitable for densely concentrated users, such as in high-rise residential buildings or communities.

Digital ODN Lifecycle Management
1. Network construction: Scan QR codes on ODN equipment and barcodes on cables to accurately register ODN resources, sync with the system, and automatically generate connection relationships and GIS information for passive devices, mapping the passive device network topology.
2. Service provisioning: Scan cable barcodes and ONU QR codes, automatically associate user info via ONU SN, and rapidly establish device, port, and drop cable topology for efficient provisioning and accurate data entry.
3. Network maintenance: Intelligently detects network changes, automatically refreshing topology and updating port status—even if the ONT is removed but the drop cable remains in the distribution box. Supports maintenance operations such as replacing distribution cables, drop cables, or ONTs, with real-time updates via APP to ensure continuous resource data accuracy.
Proven in Commercial Deployment
VSOL MentisODN has been successfully deployed in the Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTCL) project, where the solution combines a prefabricated optical cross-connect cabinet, cascading distribution boxes, and terminal distribution boxes to support up to 64 subscribers per PON port.

The deployment demonstrates how digital ODN management, GIS-based resource visualization, and topology-based resource tracking can improve network construction efficiency and long-term operational management.
