A recent report from Omdia shows that the number of homes connected to the Internet at speeds of 1Gbps and above will nearly triple, from 63 million in 2021 to 169 million in 2023.
Users have become accustomed to reliable and stable broadband services. At the same time, diverse applications require superior broadband quality and more comprehensive services, driving demand for next-generation PON+ networks. The upgrade of XPON (EPON/GPON) to 10G PON (XG-PON and XGS-PON) becomes necessary.
With far-sighted development concepts, VSOL launched the XG/XGS-PON OLT and 8 Port Combo PON OLT, the latest generation of fiber-optic technology, to embrace the trend of networking evolution.
XG/XGS-PON OLT V1600XG02
XG/XGS-PON OLT plays a major role in revolutionizing the way we deliver broadband services. Compared to the GPON OLT, it has improvements in performance in all aspects, making it ideal to meet the needs of the growing demand for high-bandwidth internet access.

Features of XG/XGS-PON OLT
Focusing on Scalability
XG/XGS PON OLT offers two optional modes that ISPs can choose different signal services according to user needs. If symmetrical 10 Gbps bandwidth is needed, then the businesses can use XGS-PON mode; If it is just a high requirement to the upstream bandwidth, XGPON may be a better choice.
Higher Bandwidth
VSOL’s XG/XGS PON OLT provides a 10G transmission rate in the downstream direction compared to the GPON OLT, making it perform well in some data-intensive activities, whether in smart parks, commercial buildings, or FTTM environments.
Lower Latency and Longer Transmission Distance
Longer transmission distance will inevitably increase the latency. But XG(S) PON can balance the two well. With up to 20 kilometers of transmission distance, XG/XGS PON OLT benefits medium operators by serving users in geographically dispersed areas. Meanwhile, the lower latency makes data packets travel faster, resulting in a more seamless experience for real-time applications like VR/AR, 4K/8K HD video, and real-time online gaming.
High-Density Deployments
Since the new XG(S) PON solution emerged with a technical upgrade that comes with higher bandwidth capacity, symmetrical internet speeds, and network efficiency improvement, with theoretically 1:256 of the optical splitting ratio, XG(S) PON OLT can connect more devices in the same network conditions.
Cost-effective
With 2*GE(RJ45)+2*GE(SFP)/10GE(SFP+), the XG/XGS-PON OLT V1600XG02 can provide a reliable and flexible connectivity. The ports of copper and fiber uplink options allow the users to find a balance between cost and performance based on their needs.
Combo PON OLT V3600G1-C
To fully protect the framework structure of the existing optical network and make the smooth transition and forwarding compatibility of GPON to 10G PON, Combo PON OLT V3600G1-C is exactly what you need.
Compact commercial XGS-PON Combo OLT and SPF+ Optical Module is a one-stop solution tailored to meet their needs for efficient and stable network upgrades.

How does Combo PON OLT work?
Since the uplink/downlink wavelengths are different from GPON, XGS-PON adopts the Combo solution to share ODN with GPON.
VSOL Combo SPF+ Optical Module integrates GPON optical module, XGS-PON optical module, and WDM combiner. With the wavelength division multiplexing technology, the module achieves independent transmission of GPON and 10G GPON optical signals on the same fiber.
Some may think an external WDM1r can be deployed in the existing GPON OLT like VSOL’s 8 Port GPON OLT V1600G1-B to achieve the three-in-one functions. To be honored, it is not a long-term solution because of the increased optical power loss and the high requirements for the networking equipment rooms.
Features of Combo PON OLT
Combo PON OLT V3600G1-C, with the functional integration of GPON OLT and XG(S)-PON OLT, is well-suited for medium ISPs/operators. The combination of 8 XG(S)-PON/GPON ports caters to a good number of users, making it ideal for medium-sized operations.
Additionally, various high-speed uplink ports (1 GE, 4*25 GE, and 2*100 GE) provide flexibility for internet backhaul connectivity. The ISP can choose the most suitable interface based on their bandwidth requirements and available infrastructure.

Comparison between XG(S)-PON OLT and Combo PON OLT
Different PON technologies provide different bandwidth and service quality. Choose one or two, operators can decide according to different user needs, service levels they mainly offer, and future upgrades.
Cost Performance
Combo PON OLT not only avoids altering the existing network structure and adding extra space for the new network but also is compatible with existing GPON network services and supports higher speed XG-PON or XG-SPON services, realizing seamless and efficient upgrading of the existing GPON network. This is a cost-effective approach for medium ISPs, who can gradually invest in upgrading their fiber optic networks based on demand.
As for XG/XGS-PON OLT, suppose only one of the PONs, XG-PON or XGS-PON, is needed in a particular deployment scenario instead of both supports simultaneously. In that case, the XG/XGS-PON OLT can reduce hardware complexity and thus cost.
Application
Combo PON OLT can perfectly serve in hybrid business scenarios where GPON services are necessary. But for ISPs who serve users with specific needs of the 10G applications which include some high-end enterprise customers and users from sparsely populated regions but developed economies, XG(S)-PON OLT needs to be deployed to bring high-speed network experience, whether in remote work, cloud computing, ultra-high-definition videos, AR/VR applications, and so on.

Future-proof
XG(S)-PON OLT is more cost-effective than Combo PON OLT if only 10G applications are used, However, the existing GPON network deployment will lose its value. As for the Combo PON OLT, the higher price means it can take on more functions to protect the deployed GPON equipment and seamlessly provide three network modes.
