Shanghai is the first city in China to launch the 5G network. By this June, over 3700 5G base stations had been built in Shanghai shortly after 5G licensing was initiated in China. China Tower Shanghai has reportedly delivered 8821 5G base stations so far. All the three major telecom operators in Shanghai, China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile, held launches of 5G mobile phones on August 16.
China Telecom Shanghai plans to put into operation 5000 5G base stations by the end of 2019, as part of its commitment to complete 5G network coverage in the central and surrounding areas of Shanghai by 2020.
China Unicom Shanghai has also completed deployment of over 2700 5G stations, which is expected to allow undisrupted outdoor 5G access within the Outer Ring and in the major suburban townships of Shanghai by September.
